From Mentee to Mentor: A Champion for the Success of Others

with Multi Unit Marketing Manager John Scheers

Inspired by the support and compassion of his earliest mentors at Aramark, Marketing Manager John Scheers prioritizes the personal and professional development of his team members, allowing him to leave a lasting influence on his community.

John Scheers, Multi Unit Marketing Manager

As a college student, John Scheers (he/him) had a passion for integrated marketing and communication, especially in the Higher Education setting. Five and a half years later, he is still passionate about creative communication and bettering the college experience, and he leads as the Marketing Manager for Dining Services at both Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and Mansfield University of Pennsylvania.

“I’m a huge proponent of amplifying the student experience. I think that everyone has the opportunity to grow in such an important way if they attend college, and a lot of that has to do with the experiences they have outside of the classroom. Dining plays a really big role in that, so I love being in a position that allows me to amplify the student experience and be an advocate for students, while still helping achieve the growth goals that we have as a company.”

Beginning his career in marketing at his Alma Mater, Kutztown University, John was able to gain an in-depth look at communication, business data, and the food service & hospitality industry.

“Funny enough, I had never worked in food service prior to starting with Aramark, and I had never thought of it as a possible opportunity for my career. I was really interested in remaining part of the community after graduating, and this was an excellent opportunity to remain involved on campus. Food service became a new passion for me.”

John recognizes the growth he has been able to achieve in a short time is due in part to his leaders and mentors who supported him personally and professionally at various steps throughout his career.

“I have really grown and developed as a person, as a leader, and as a member of the hospitality field. I credit a lot of that, if not all of it, to my leaders and their supportiveness over the years, whether it was conversations at the end of a busy day or being granted the opportunity to attend different conferences and team meetings. I know that if those things didn’t happen, I very well may still be in the same exact spot that I was in five years ago.”

He credits Paige Jensen as his first leader in marketing — the person who asked him to apply to his first role at Kutztown who he then had the opportunity to continue to work with throughout the years. John also recognizes his General Manager at Kutztown, Chris Wallace, his Resident District Manager at Bloomsburg, Nick Wiest, and his General Manager, Maria Bauman, as leaders who have allowed him opportunities to learn more about the business and expand his horizons as a marketing professional at Aramark.

Because of the mentorship John received from an early age, he is looking to pass that passion and leadership onto his own teammates and the students he works with.

“I found this career path through the support that I received from leaders on campus, so I have tried to be that same person towards my team members. That’s really one of the most rewarding things to me. I now have a team of marketing students, and I am incredibly committed to their success. I don’t see their roles as just a job. I really look at it from the perspective of how I can help them become successful, just as my leaders did to me when I was a student.”

While John had become accustomed to the environment and operations at college dining halls, the pandemic presented new challenges to John and his team. Despite facing staffing shortages, supply chain dilemmas, and other disruptions to the business, John remained committed to his role and overcame those challenges by using them as chances to learn and grow as a professional.

“COVID-19 provided me an opportunity to get even better insight and understanding of our business as a whole. With staffing challenges affecting the entire hospitality industry because of the pandemic, helping out at some of our operations – whether catering events or serving food in the dining hall – really provided me an opportunity to get that hands-on experience within the food service industry. It was still an opportunity to learn and get a better understanding of everything that we do.”

John’s commitment to the betterment of his teammates and passion to serve, even in dining halls when needed, has allowed him to leave a lasting influence on his leaders, his team members, and his community.

“I think that the most rewarding part of what I do is being able to have a positive impact on students’ lives.”

  • What do you enjoy about working on a college campus?

Being able to continue to live on the semester system is honestly pretty nice. It's a good way to break up the year into two pieces; it helps kind of make scheduling and the passing of time a little more manageable. I also like that it's a cyclical pattern. We know what to expect as every semester goes on. With a lot of students that come in at the beginning of every year, we know that they're going to be new to campus, we know what to anticipate and how to better, suit their needs and use that to our strengths in the world of marketing communications. It's also really exciting to be here, regardless of the campus, the energy and the excitement is pretty palpable at the beginning of the fall semester. There's a whole new batch of young adults who are finally getting to experience a little bit more freedom than they've ever had before. You can really see the excitement and feel how stoked everyone is to be able to create their own individual identities.

  • How did you manage challenges presented by COVID-19?

Safety had to remain paramount. That fall semester of 2020 was a little weird – we didn’t get to have all the big events that we used to have on campus where we would gather everyone together and have these fun, large-scale events with the dining program. It affected my role and definitely a big part of it, but it also provided me an opportunity to get even better insight and understanding of our business as a whole. With staffing challenges affecting the entire hospitality industry because of the pandemic, helping out at some of our operations, whether catering events or serving food in the dining hall, really provided me an opportunity to get that hands-on experience within the food service industry. It was still an opportunity to learn and get a better understanding of everything that we do.

  • What advice do you have for others in the early stages of their professional career?

Being open to helping out and being a team player really builds a lot of rapport. Whether that be with your employees or with your coworkers, demonstrating to your leaders that you are a team player provides you with more opportunity to grow as a person and within your professional role. Be connected with your campus, or with your clients, and try to learn what the culture looks like at the place that you work. How can you better serve or connect with your consumers and with your clients and learn what it is specifically they're looking for. Have a keen eye for detail.
