Language, Learning, and a Love for Cooking

with Guadalupe Reyna

Whether training new employees or helping them learn another language, Guadalupe Reyna has a passion for inclusivity in the kitchen.

Guadalupe Reyna (she/her), a Food Service Professional now in our Corrections line of business, has seen her career opportunities grow every day with Aramark. Not only that, but as a leader on her team, Guadalupe has made a massive impact helping others learn their way around a kitchen, learn new languages, and grow their careers despite the challenges they face.

Even before she started at Aramark in our Business Dining line of business as a cashier 8 years ago, Guadalupe, known as Lupe, had heard from others about how welcoming, supportive, and ripe with opportunity Aramark was.

“I heard about the company from a friend who worked here. She spoke very well about the company, mentioning that Aramark helps people a lot and that they consider you. But what really motivated me was that the company gives you opportunities to grow. My passion is for cooking, and I saw a great opportunity to start that journey at Aramark.”

Over time, with the support of her managers and coworkers, Lupita was promoted to a rewarding and challenging role as a Food Prep Worker and learns more and more about the culinary arts every day. In the process, however, Lupe found that her true passion was for leading, teaching, and helping others.

“I really had the opportunity to share my knowledge with people who came from other states, from other countries, who found themselves relying on me to teach them. The funny thing is that they didn’t speak English or Spanish, but I managed to find a way to work together.”

Through Aramark’s partnership with the International Rescue Committee, a program that helps resettle international refugees from some of the harshest conditions in the world, Lupe was able to work with a diverse range of people including over 15 teammates from Africa, Turkey, Nicaragua and beyond. This meant that in order to communicate, train, and connect effectively, she had to get creative.

“The training was done like a game. I would show them a recipe, and since we spoke different languages, I would ask, “How do you say this?” and I would point to the vegetables or the milk and so on. Sometimes, I would tell them to take a picture of the meal we made, then ask them to take the picture out later and it would help them remember.” So, little by little they were learning, I was learning, and we were playing and creating while doing it.”

While training new employees and teaching people new skills is difficult, working through a language barrier can require even more patience and compassion. For Lupe, who now speaks both Spanish and English, her motivation to help others stems from the compassion she experienced as a new hire herself.

“The first thing is that I put myself in other peoples’ shoes. I remember when I arrived, I didn’t even know how to say “Thank you” or “Okay” in English, and that’s what motivates me. I remember that I needed a person by my side to teach me, to guide me. And that’s what I try to do with people, to help them learn the way I learned, to give them that motivation and that push to show that there is someone who is interested in helping them learn and move forward. That’s what fills me up.”

Q + A

  • What advice would you give someone trying to learn a new language in the workplace?

My advice would be not to give up, first of all, and to learn how to listen to those around you, work as a team, and have confidence in your work team. Because that's where we learn, from people who already have the experience that we don't have.

  • Why do you love your job?

I love to prepare food and I love to teach people. Look, I tell people who have been learning with me, how do you go to church on Sunday? You put on your best clothes, you put on make-up, you dress up, you comb your hair to look good, for others to see you, to feel happy. The same goes for a salad, you have to see the colors, you have to make it look pretty so that when people see the presentation, they want to eat it. Put love into it. They laugh and everything but they are learning as I tell them. If you put love into the food, people will fall in love with it.

  • How has Aramark helped you grow professionally?

Aramark has helped me grow as an employee and as a person. The way we are treated by the managers is as humans, as a team, it is something that I think the company also educates them [the managers] on. Aramark guides them to be able to have happy employees. We work as a team here. We all work hand-in-hand, we all communicate and that's what Aramark has given me - the growth, both as a person and as an employee.

  • What advice would you give to someone considering joining Aramark?

My advice would be for them to come with the desire to work, first of all. And to come with goals, because if you have goals, you can do more in this company. And don't get discouraged, always ask for more opportunities, always be be hungry to learn, that's what I would say. Not to stay in one place, learn, have that passion to say 'I've learned everything in this position, I want more, I want more'. Because we are in a place where it can be done, that's what I would say, keep an open mind.

  • Do you have any great memories from your time at Aramark?

There are so many. The first one that comes to mind is when I was a cashier, I was very excited because I said "this is the job I want", and then a manager came to me and said, ‘Oh, I've seen that you're happy here and that you're doing everything very well, but I see you’re also looking to do something else.’ I said ‘Like what?’ She said, "You tell me. I see you with that eagerness, because I see you walk into the kitchen and stare at the tables, I see that passion, but you don't ask." I said to her, "Did you really notice that?" And I was happy because there was a person who noticed that I that I wanted to do something more in the kitchen, that the outside was getting too small for me. I felt important that someone noticed that I wanted something else, another skill, to learn something else. That really stuck with me and that's one thing I've never forgotten.
